Major Deal Between Tata Motors and Stellantis: Vehicles to be Manufactured in India for Over 50 Countries
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and the major European automotive company Stellantis have entered into a new agreement to further strengthen their partnership.
Under this agreement, both companies will collaborate on the development of technology, design, and platforms for new vehicles. These vehicles will be manufactured in India and sold in more than 50 countries worldwide.
The objective of this partnership is to strengthen their presence in the international market by leveraging India’s engineering capabilities and its proficiency in cost-effective vehicle manufacturing. The companies believe this will help boost vehicle development and production within India.
Tata Motors to Share Technology and Platforms
As part of this agreement, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) will share its advanced vehicle technology and platforms with Stellantis.
Stellantis will utilize its expertise in engineering and vehicle development to create new vehicles based on these technologies. These vehicles will be tailored to meet the specific requirements of different countries.
This will take into account customer preferences, local regulations, and road conditions. The partnership will assist Stellantis in developing new vehicles, while simultaneously providing Tata Motors’ technology with access to international markets.
Vehicles to be Manufactured in India
Under the agreement, the new vehicles will be manufactured in India, utilizing the production facilities of Fiat India Automobiles Private Limited (FIAPL)—a 50:50 joint venture between Tata Motors and Stellantis.
This initiative is expected to boost vehicle manufacturing in India and enhance export potential. The companies aim to establish India as a key component of their global production and vehicle development network. This agreement follows an initial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two companies. At that time, both firms had agreed to explore potential collaborations in manufacturing, engineering, and supply chain operations, both within India and in international markets.
How will both companies benefit?
Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, noted that the partnership between the two companies spans over two decades. This new agreement extends the relationship to include the development of vehicle technologies and platforms. Meanwhile, Tianshu Xin, COO of Stellantis Asia-Pacific, stated that by combining Tata Motors’ technology with the global reach of Stellantis, it will be possible to develop new and superior vehicles.
Stellantis owns 14 major automotive brands, including Jeep, Citroën, Fiat, and Peugeot. The company operates in markets across Europe, North America, South America, the Middle East, Africa, and the Asia-Pacific region. This partnership is expected to boost new technology, vehicle development, and production in India, while also potentially expanding the reach of Indian-manufactured vehicles into international markets.
