No more long queues at the airport: ‘Digi Yatra’ now available for international travelers at 7 airports
‘Digi Yatra’ has launched trials for international passengers at seven Indian airports, highlighting the rapid adoption of digital technology within the Indian aviation sector. During this trial—running from November through December 2026—Indian citizens holding electronic passports (e-passports) can use ‘Digi Yatra’ at designated touchpoints within the airport when traveling on select international flights. Currently, this facility is available for passengers flying with Air India and IndiGo.
How to avail of this facility:
First, download the ‘Digi Yatra’ app on your phone; if you already have it, ensure it is updated.
To use ‘Digi Yatra’ for international travel, passengers must create an e-passport-based ‘Verifiable Credential’ (VC) via the mobile app by linking their passport.
To do this, you will need to scan the Machine-Readable Zone (MRZ) of your passport.
Next, use a smartphone equipped with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to read the chip embedded in your passport.
Then, take a selfie and verify your information.
Once this process is complete, your credential will be stored in the ‘Digi Yatra’ wallet on your phone.
Where can it be used?
The ‘Digi Yatra’ app, linked to your e-passport, can be used at designated touchpoints across seven select airports in the country. This will help reduce the time spent on security checks and boarding. These trials are currently underway at airports in Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Amritsar. Passengers can utilize this facility at various locations, including terminal entry points, security hold areas, and boarding gates. Feedback received during the trial will be used in planning for a larger-scale rollout next year.
The rest of the procedures will remain unchanged:
- It is important to note that this service will operate alongside existing travel processes.
- You will still need to follow the standard procedures for the verification of documents required by the airline.
- Procedures for immigration and other travel requirements will also remain the same.
- As before, you must carry all necessary travel documents, including your ticket and visa.
- Only Indian passport holders will be able to use this facility via ‘Digi Yatra’.
- Once the app is used, your travel data is deleted within 24 hours.
