OpenAI will build a mega data center in India, preparing for major expansion in Asia

ChatGPT maker OpenAI is preparing to build a huge new data center in India. This project will be part of the company’s Stargate AI infrastructure expansion and is considered to be the company’s biggest step in Asia. OpenAI is looking for local partners in India to set up a data center with at least 1 gigawatt capacity here. This could be one of the largest data centers in India, where companies like Microsoft, Google and Reliance have already invested.

Location and timeline yet to be decided

The location and timeline of this project is not clear at the moment. Sources say that the company’s CEO Sam Altman may announce it during his visit to India this month, although this plan is not yet finalized. The company has not made any official comment on this. San Francisco-based OpenAI has been spending heavily on AI infrastructure in the US and abroad in recent times. Its $500 billion Stargate project in the US is being built in collaboration with SoftBank and Oracle, which will have a capacity of around 4.5 gigawatts. This project has also been praised by President Donald Trump.

Looking for partners

OpenAI is also working on a global initiative called “OpenAI for Countries”, which aims to build AI infrastructure with democratic values. The company says that this program will pave the way for the US to lead in global AI development and counter China’s efforts. The company is currently looking for an initial 10 partnerships in different regions and so far more than 30 countries have shown interest in it. OpenAI has recently announced a project of up to 520 megawatts in Norway and a 5 gigawatt project in Abu Dhabi, out of which only 1 gigawatt capacity will be used by OpenAI itself.
