Jio writes letter to TRAI, seeks permission for flexible use of spectrum for satellite and mobile services

New Delhi: Jio Satellite Communications of the country’s largest telecom company Reliance Jio has written to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) seeking permission for flexible use of spectrum for satellite and mobile phone service networks. .

Jio made this request to TRAI

The company yesterday said in a letter to TRAI Chairman PD Vaghela that technology is evolving which will enable convergence of satellite and terrestrial networks and therefore TRAI should consider flexible use of radio frequencies for terrestrial and satellite services.

Jio cited the decision of the New Zealand government

In its letter, Jio Satellite cited the New Zealand government’s decision to allow flexible use of high frequencies in the 24-30 GHz band.

Jio has already submitted its comments in response to TRAI’s consultation paper on “Allocation of Spectrum for Space Based Communication Services”. The consultation paper closed for comments on 1 June.

Spectrum should be auctioned for satellite service – Jio

Jio wants spectrum allocation for satellite services only through auction while satellite service companies have demanded allocation of radio frequencies through unanimous administrative method. Satellite companies have argued that they use spectrum based on a shared orbital position.

Jio gave this argument

Jio supported its argument with the opinion of two retired judges of the Supreme Court who had suggested that auction is the only way to allocate spectrum for commercial purpose. Jio had sought the opinion of the judges on the basis of the Supreme Court’s decision in the 2G spectrum case.
