10 Years Later: Amazon Set to Build a Smartphone Again! A Fresh Start After the Fire Phone Flop
Amazon is preparing to make a comeback in the smartphone market once again. Nearly a decade ago, the company launched the Fire Phone, which—despite high expectations—proved to be a flop and had to be discontinued after just 14 months. Now, according to a new report, Amazon is working on a new smartphone project, internally codenamed “Transformer.” Notably, this time around, instead of simply launching a standalone phone, the company aims to create a device that becomes an integral part of a user’s entire digital ecosystem, remaining seamlessly integrated into their daily usage throughout the day.
According to Reuters, this new smartphone is being developed under Amazon’s devices and services unit. The objective is not merely to build a phone, but to position it as a personalized device that remains connected to a user’s digital experience throughout their entire day. It is expected to feature deep integration with the Alexa voice assistant, enabling users to easily access shopping, content, and other services.
The report suggests that this project is part of Jeff Bezos’s long-standing vision to create a voice-based computing system—much like the one depicted in the science fiction series *Star Trek*. This time, the company’s focus is heavily centered on AI, aiming to enable users to utilize the phone without relying on traditional apps.
This new phone may feature capabilities designed to streamline access to Amazon’s various services, such as Prime Video, Prime Music, and online shopping. Additionally, the device could simplify tasks like ordering food through partners such as Grubhub.
However, no concrete details regarding the project’s timeline, pricing, or launch date have emerged yet. According to Reuters, it remains a possibility that the project could be shelved midway due to strategic or financial considerations.
If this plan proves successful, Amazon could once again pose a challenge to major brands like Apple and Samsung. However, given the failure of the Fire Phone in the past, the company appears to be approaching this new project with considerable caution.
