HAL CMD: Leadership Change at Hindustan Aeronautics; Ravi K. Becomes 22nd CMD as Dr. DK Sunil Retires
A major change has taken place at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), a public sector undertaking in the defense sector. On Friday, Ravi K. assumed office as the company’s 22nd Chairman and Managing Director (CMD). He succeeds Dr. DK Sunil, who retired on April 30, 2026.
Ravi K. Possesses Over 30 Years of Experience
Ravi K. brings with him over 30 years of extensive experience across diverse fields such as Research & Development (R&D), manufacturing, and electronics. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Director (Operations) at HAL and is credited with playing a pivotal role in helping the company achieve ‘Maharatna’ status.
What Did He Say After Assuming Charge?
Upon assuming office, he outlined his priorities, stating that his objective is to transform HAL into a globally competitive aerospace and defense enterprise through innovation, Artificial Intelligence (AI), operational excellence, and the active participation of employees.
Throughout his career, Ravi K. has held several key leadership positions. He has served as the Executive Director and General Manager of the LCA Tejas Division, in addition to holding strategic roles such as Executive Director (Corporate Planning).
During his tenure, HAL successfully executed several major defense contracts. These include contracts related to the supply of 180 LCA Tejas aircraft to the Indian Air Force, and 156 LCH Prachand helicopters to the Indian Army and Air Force. He is also credited with the successful operationalization of the LCA Tejas fleet within the Indian Air Force.
Special Emphasis Placed on Customer-Centric Initiatives
Ravi K. placed special emphasis on customer-centric initiatives. He played a pivotal role in enhancing the serviceability of the fleet, establishing seamless data communication with Indian Air Force bases, and implementing a Single Point of Contact (SPOC) system to ensure timely support.
Furthermore, while promoting indigenization, he expanded production capabilities at Nashik, thereby strengthening indigenous capabilities within the Tejas program. The strategy of outsourcing major aircraft assemblies to private sector partners was also part of his initiatives—a move that has now begun to yield tangible results in the form of sustained deliveries.
Driven by his strategic initiatives, HAL has also expanded into the civil manufacturing and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) sectors. This has opened up new revenue streams for the company and bolstered its market presence.
