Number of AI Agents at TCS Could Match Workforce Size in Three Years
The scope of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has expanded significantly over the past few years. For Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the country’s largest software maker, AI is emerging as a major driver of growth. The company reports receiving client demand to integrate AI into core business operations rather than using it merely as a standalone technological tool.
According to a media report, TCS Chairman N. Chandrasekaran stated at the company’s Annual General Meeting that AI presents a crucial opportunity for the IT industry, surpassing the impact of previous major technological shifts. He noted that amidst geopolitical instability and economic fluctuations, companies are prioritizing efficiency, productivity, and resilience—areas where AI has become increasingly important. Chandrasekaran highlighted that AI is transforming the way software is developed and maintained, reducing the amount of human effort required in various stages of the process.
Drawing a parallel between the impact of AI and the rapid business growth driven by cloud computing, Chandrasekaran remarked that AI is reshaping workflow design and decision-making processes within companies. TCS’s AI-related revenue has reached approximately $2.5 billion, growing at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of over 22% during the last four years. The company is collaborating with clients across various industries to build AI platforms and integrate AI into business processes; it has also initiated several ‘Sovereign AI’ projects within the country.
Chandrasekaran projects that the presence of AI agents within enterprises will increase, potentially reaching a scale comparable to the company’s human workforce. “In the next three years, the number of AI workers at TCS could equal the size of the workforce,” he stated. The company’s net profit rose by approximately 12% in the fourth quarter of the last financial year. TCS reported a net profit of approximately ₹13,718 crore for the fourth quarter. In the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year, the figure stood at around ₹12,224 crore. The company’s revenue for the fourth quarter rose by 9.64 percent to approximately ₹70,698 crore.
