Massive Layoffs News: Adidas Lays Off About 50% of Staff in India; Company Calls It a ‘Difficult Decision’

Sportswear company Adidas has laid off approximately half of the employees at its Gurugram-based tech hub. According to some reports, the hub employed around 700 people.

Adidas has confirmed the reduction of several roles within its technology organization in India. Describing it as a “difficult decision,” the company stated that the move was taken to align its operating model with the changing needs of the business.

What Did Adidas Say?

In a statement, Adidas said it decided to reduce certain positions within its technology organization in India as part of efforts to align its operating model with evolving business requirements.

According to the company, the aim of these changes is to simplify parts of the organization, strengthen key capabilities, and position Adidas for long-term success in a rapidly changing business and technology landscape.

The company expressed gratitude for the contributions of the affected employees and stated that those impacted by the layoffs would be supported with care, respect, and appropriate transition assistance.

Gurugram Tech Hub Launched in 2021

The Gurugram tech hub was launched in 2021 with the objective of attracting and developing top technology and engineering talent to work on Adidas products. Approximately 700 employees were working at the hub.

According to reports, the affected employees have been divided into two groups. Some received their exit letters on September 15, while the second group is expected to remain with the company until December 15. During this period, they will complete knowledge transfer and the handover of their responsibilities.

Wave of Layoffs in the Tech Sector

These layoffs at Adidas come at a time when reports of job cuts across the technology sector are surfacing. According to reports, Oracle has also initiated a new round of layoffs as part of a major restructuring. The affected employees were reportedly informed on September 14 that their positions were being eliminated.
