Elon Musk’s ‘X Money’: Send $1 by Long-Pressing the ‘Like’ Button – A New Feature Coming to X

When people like a post on social media, they typically respond by ‘liking’ or commenting on it. Now, however, Elon Musk is preparing to turn this into a way to send money. On October 25, he announced on X that the platform will introduce a feature allowing users to send $1 to an individual by long-pressing the ‘like’ button.

With this feature, users will no longer need to seek out separate payment methods to compensate a creator or the author of a post. However, full details—such as when this feature will launch, who will be eligible to use it, and the specific terms and conditions—have not yet been disclosed.

What is ‘X Money’?
‘X Money’ is part of Elon Musk’s broader vision to evolve X beyond a mere social media platform. His goal is to transform it into an all-encompassing app where users can not only view posts and send messages but also manage financial transactions.
The company’s payment service is expected to include features such as debit cards, interest on certain eligible deposits, and cashback on select purchases—all subject to specific rules and eligibility criteria. The banking infrastructure for this service is supported by Cross River Bank; in other words, X is not a bank itself, but rather a platform that facilitates financial services.

Will this feature be available in India?
As of now, X has not provided any official information regarding a launch date for ‘X Money’ in India, nor has it confirmed the availability of the $1-payment feature there. In India, mobile-based money transfers are already seamless thanks to the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

Consequently, for ‘X Money’ to operate in India, it would need to comply with local regulations and secure the necessary approvals. For the time being, this feature should be viewed as part of X’s broader payment services initiative in the United States. Whether or when it might launch in India will depend on future announcements from the company.
