Google for India: Google partners with DigiLocker, users will be able to store government IDs on Android phones.

Google has announced a partnership with DigiLocker on Monday. DigiLocker is a government authorized identification storage system that locally stores government issued IDs on Android devices.

In fact, this partnership, announced at the company’s Google for India conference, is part of Google’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) offerings. This includes on-device processing of text and images to identify all relevant documents and arrange them in locally stored ‘files’ folders.

DigiLocker will also tap API

Google’s Android operating system will also tap the DigiLocker application programming interface (API) in conjunction with the local organization of documents using AI. It will store the authorized ID documents issued by the government locally on the smartphone itself.

Abhishek Singh, President and Chief Executive of the National e-Governance Division (NEGD), said that the application made by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (Meity) has been authorized by an official document today. With this, DigiLocker will very soon be available as a default pre-installed service on Android devices.

Google said that its AI Identification Organization system will use AI processing capacity. It is localized on each device and does not expose any sensitive documents to the Internet. This AI system will be able to recognize documents issued by the government like Aadhaar and PAN. In addition, there will be a pattern lock to secure locally stored copies of ID documents.
