Companies like Amazon and Microsoft are causing a loss of Rs 3000 crore to the government, complaint reached the Centre.

This claim has been made by the telecom companies that the Indian government is losing more than Rs 3,000 crore in revenue due to big MNC companies like Amazon and Microsoft. This complaint has been made to the Government of India on behalf of Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), an organization of telecom companies.

How is the revenue being lost?

A report in Dainik Jagran said that telecom companies say that MNC companies like Amazon and Microsoft are using OTT apps like WhatsApp and Telegram to send messages to customers. They are definitely losing revenue due to this. The government is also incurring a loss of around Rs 3000 crore in the form of license fees and charges.

In a letter written to Neeraj Mittal, Secretary in the Telecom Department, it was said that this is also a clear violation of the rules. No rules of any kind apply to OTT and hence there is no pressure on companies to keep customer data safe etc. There is no need for KYC etc.

What kind of message are the companies sending?

It was told in the report that notifications, certification, marketing communication and OTP etc. are being sent to the customers by MNC companies. It is being used by technology, e-commerce, finance and cloud companies.

Risk of data theft increased

In the letter written by the telecom companies, it has been said that sending messages through OTT apps has increased the risk of spam, data theft and cyber crime to the customers. Also, the government has been requested to make SMS the only medium for sending messages and other routes should be declared illegal.
