Tejas Fighter Jet Engines to Now Be Manufactured in India: Agreement Reached Between US Company GE Aerospace and Hindustan Aeronautics
A deal for the manufacturing of fighter jet engines between the US defense company GE Aerospace and India’s state-owned enterprise, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), is expected to be finalized soon. Both companies have reached a consensus on technical matters regarding the co-production of F414 jet engines for combat aircraft.
The company announced that significant progress has now been made in the negotiations, which have been ongoing for the past three years. An initial agreement regarding the F414 engines was reached between GE Aerospace and HAL in 2023, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States. Since then, both parties have been discussing the finer details and aspects of Technology Transfer (ToT).
According to the latest updates, both companies have reached a mutual consensus on technical matters. This is being hailed as a major achievement for the defense sector under India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) campaign and the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
Domestic Depot to be Established for the Air Force; Dependence on Foreign Nations to End
In addition to the F414 deal, GE Aerospace signed another significant contract with the Indian Air Force (IAF) on Monday. Under this agreement, a domestic depot facility will be established within India specifically for the maintenance of F404-IN20 engines. These engines currently power the Air Force’s fleet of Tejas fighter jets.
Until now, India had to rely on foreign nations for major repairs or maintenance of these engines—a process that incurred significant costs and consumed a considerable amount of time. Now, this facility will be located within India and will be operated and maintained directly by the Indian Air Force itself. GE will provide the necessary training and equipment for this endeavor.
India-US Partnership, Spanning 40 Years, Further Strengthened
In a statement, GE Aerospace noted that this agreement represents a significant step toward bolstering economic growth and advancing cooperation between India and the United States. It will provide a new dimension of expansion to the partnership that GE and HAL have shared over the past 40 years. The company believes that this facility will significantly improve the engine’s turnaround time (the time required for repairs) and enhance the Air Force’s operational capability.
