Mother Dairy Launches India’s First Soil-Dissolvable Milk Pouch, Offering Relief to the Environment
Demonstrating its commitment to the environment and sustainability, Mother Dairy has introduced a new type of milk pouch. This pouch will naturally decompose in the soil. The company announced this on Tuesday, June 2.
This marks India’s first milk pouch of its kind that will leave no trace of plastic in the soil. The company will begin utilizing these pouches in the Delhi-NCR region starting June 5, World Environment Day. Initially, this initiative will apply to cow’s milk. Mother Dairy is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).
The company supplies approximately 5.5 million liters of milk daily. The new pouch employs a unique packaging technology; its material transforms into bio-available wax, which is then broken down into natural elements by microorganisms present in the soil. NDDB Chairman Meenesh Shah stated that this packaging will decompose in the soil within a few years. Furthermore, this initiative will have no impact on milk prices for consumers.
A Step Towards Environmental Conservation
Meenesh Shah affirmed that Mother Dairy is committed to protecting the planet. This initiative underscores the company’s leadership capabilities within the sector and reflects its dedication to fostering a sustainable, future-ready ecosystem. Jayatirth Chari, Managing Director of Mother Dairy, revealed that developing this pouch required over four years of research. Its primary objective is to ensure that no plastic residue is left behind in the environment.
Recyclable and Diverse Product Portfolio
These milk pouches will remain recyclable. Their key distinguishing feature, however, is their ability to decompose into natural elements—a characteristic that will aid in addressing the challenges posed by plastic waste. Established in 1974, Mother Dairy produces a wide range of milk and dairy products, including curd, ice cream, paneer (cottage cheese), and ghee. Additionally, the company markets edible oils under the ‘Dhara’ brand, and fruits, vegetables, and snacks under the ‘Safal’ brand.
