Physical Discs for Sony PlayStation Games to be Discontinued from 2028!
Sony is set to stop producing physical discs for its PlayStation games. The company has announced that it will completely halt physical disc production starting in 2028. Thereafter, all new games will be available exclusively in digital format; they will only be downloadable via the PlayStation Store and other retail outlets. The company notes that the trend towards digital gaming is growing with the times, and users are increasingly prioritizing digital games.
Physical discs for Sony PlayStation games will be discontinued starting January 2028. The company has confirmed it will cease physical disc production entirely and offer games solely in digital form. Games will be available for download digitally through the PlayStation Store and retailers. This major shift is driven by the rising popularity of digital games and changing user preferences; according to the company, most gamers now prioritize online gaming.
The company has clarified that this new policy will apply only to games produced after January 2028. It will not affect games that have already been released or are scheduled for release in disc format prior to that date. Notably, Sony has also stopped producing blank Blu-ray discs, MiniDiscs, and MiniDV tapes in Japan. In a blog post, the company stated that this change would allow it to better align with the preferred methods by which the majority of the community currently plays and accesses games.
Leading gaming console manufacturers are observing a shift among users towards digital gaming. Concurrently, the expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has caused memory prices to surge, a trend that continues today, leading to higher console prices. Sony raised the prices of its flagship PlayStation 5 consoles in April, increasing the cost of the Disc Edition from $549.99 to $649.99.
