PhonePe Jobs: 20,000 new hires and over 5 million devices to be deployed in a year—what is the company’s grand plan?
Digital payment platform PhonePe has announced plans to recruit 20,000 on-roll sales employees over the next 12 months. During this period, the company will focus on strengthening its merchant network in the country’s smaller towns and villages.
This essentially means PhonePe aims to onboard more shopkeepers in rural areas onto its digital payment network. To achieve this, the company will expand its sales team to increase its reach among small business owners.
Over 5 million devices to be deployed across various regions
PhonePe’s initiative goes beyond merely increasing its workforce; the company plans to deploy more than 5 million devices over the next 12 months. These will include devices such as smart speakers and Point-of-Sale (PoS) terminals. These devices aim to make it easier for shopkeepers in rural and underserved areas to accept digital payments.
Major investment following the MDR framework
PhonePe’s expansion comes at a time when the NPCI has decided to levy a 0.4% fee on select UPI merchant transactions. A portion of the revenue generated from this fee will be used to expand digital payment access to small businesses in areas where penetration remains low. PhonePe stated that the recently announced MDR framework enables the company to invest in merchant expansion with a long-term perspective.
Over 720 million registered users
As of August, PhonePe’s payment network comprised over 720 million registered users and more than 50 million merchants. The company now seeks to further expand this network by increasing its footprint in small towns and rural areas.
In short, over the next 12 months, PhonePe’s focus will not be limited to acquiring new users but will also center on bringing a vast number of shopkeepers and small business owners into the digital payment ecosystem.
