Government Readies Plan to Boost Domestic Manufacturing; 120 Items Identified to Reduce Import Dependency

The government has intensified efforts to reduce reliance on imports—particularly from countries like China—and to bolster domestic manufacturing. According to sources, approximately 120 products have been identified for which incentives and research and development (R&D) support could be provided to scale up domestic production. The initiative aims to enhance the country’s production capacity in key sectors such as pharmaceuticals, construction, chemicals, and textiles, while decreasing dependence on foreign supplies. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) will work toward providing the necessary support to companies in this regard.

Incentives and R&D Support to Boost Domestic Production

Sources indicate that there is a plan to offer capital incentives to help companies keep production costs low, thereby making domestic manufacturing more competitive. Furthermore, the government may consider providing time-bound protection to domestic producers to help them compete with foreign firms during the initial stages.

The government’s focus extends beyond merely increasing domestic production; it also aims to reduce reliance on imported technology and foster the development of indigenous technical capabilities among Indian companies. To this end, plans are in place to provide support for research and development. There will also be a strong emphasis on strengthening supply chains in sectors such as battery and solar manufacturing.

How Will Boosting Domestic Manufacturing Benefit the Country?

1. Reduced Dependency on Imports from Countries Like China

By increasing the domestic production of goods for which India currently relies on other nations, industries can ensure a steady supply of raw materials and essential components—even in the event of disruptions to foreign supply chains. This will help mitigate risks associated with supply chains. 2. Foreign exchange will be saved

As the import of certain products decreases, the payments made outside the country for them will also decline. This will result in the saving of foreign exchange.
