Adani Energy Launches New 1,000 MW Power Link for Mumbai; City Gains Modern Power Corridor
Adani Electricity Mumbai Infrastructure Limited (AEMIL), a subsidiary of Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL), has commissioned a 1,000-megawatt (MW) High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission link between Kudus and Aarey. This marks a significant step by the company toward strengthening power infrastructure across Mumbai and the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The project comprises a 30-kilometer overhead line and a 50-kilometer underground corridor. It has been designed to operate amidst the complexities of a densely populated urban environment and features the world’s first compact HVDC substation.
Project Conceived Following 2020 Power Outage
The concept for this project emerged following the power outage that struck Mumbai in October 2020. That outage exposed vulnerabilities within the city’s power supply infrastructure. This project represents a major initiative aimed at enhancing the robustness and reliability of the power grid. Essentially, this link enables Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to draw additional power from sources outside the city, including renewable energy generated in other regions. While Mumbai is already connected to the National Grid, this HVDC link further optimizes that connectivity. It facilitates greater control, efficiency, and capacity in power flow—particularly regarding the integration of renewable energy sources.
Mumbai Gains a Modern Power Corridor
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region ranks among the urban areas in India with the highest levels of electricity consumption. Kandarp Patel, CEO of Adani Energy Solutions Limited, stated, “With the commissioning of the Aarey-Kudus transmission line, Mumbai now possesses a modern power corridor capable of integrating large-scale renewable energy with high reliability. This is one of the fastest HVDC projects commissioned to date, powered by advanced VSC-based HVDC technology. It marks a significant step towards a cleaner and more robust energy future for Mumbai.”
