FCRA: Home Ministry canceled FCRA licenses of five NGOs, gave this reason

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has canceled the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) licenses of five renowned NGOs after following due process citing misuse of foreign grants and other reasons.

Against which organizations did the Central Government issue an order to take action?

The NGOs against whom this action has been taken include CNI Synodical Board of Social Service (CNI-SBSS), Voluntary Health Association of India (VHAI), Indo-Global Social Service Society (IGSSS), Church Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA) and Evangelical Fellowship of India (EFOI).

Licenses of more than 6,600 NGOs canceled in five years

As of July 17, 2023, there were 16,301 NGOs with valid FCRA licenses in the country. The Center has canceled FCRA licenses of more than 6,600 NGOs in the last five years for violating the law. Overall, FCRA licenses of 20,693 NGOs have been canceled in the last decade.

According to data disclosed in Parliament last year, Rs 55,741.51 crore in foreign contributions were received by 13,520 FCRA-registered associations or NGOs between the 2019-2020 and 2021-2022 financial years.
