Maharashtra Government Acquires 23-Story Air India Building; Deal Finalized for ₹1,601 Crore
The Maharashtra government has formally acquired the Air India building, situated in South Mumbai near the state secretariat, ‘Mantralaya’. The registration of the transfer agreement between the Maharashtra Public Works Department and Air India Assets Holding Limited was completed in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The Maharashtra government has now officially become the owner of this building, located at Nariman Point in South Mumbai. A statement issued by the government noted that the transaction process commenced after the Central Government approved the sale of the building to the Maharashtra government in March 2024. The deal was concluded following the completion of all administrative and legal formalities. This process was finalized in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, following a cabinet meeting. However, the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed in the government’s official statement.
Present on the occasion were Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, Tourism Minister Shambhuraj Desai, Public Works Minister Shivendrasinharaje Bhosale, Chief Secretary Rajesh Agarwal, Additional Chief Secretary (PWD) Milind Mhaiskar, and officials from Air India. With this, the formal transfer of the Air India building—situated along the shores of the Arabian Sea—has been completed.
The 23-Story Building: An Icon of Mumbai
This 23-story Air India building, situated in Mumbai facing the Arabian Sea, has been purchased for ₹1,601 crore. The Air India building is considered an iconic landmark of Mumbai; it has long stood as a symbol of Air India’s prestige. Constructed in 1974, the building was designed by the renowned architect John Burgee. It served as Air India’s headquarters for several decades. The building had remained vacant since 2013, when Air India’s headquarters were relocated from Mumbai to Delhi.
