Satellite Internet Coming to the Hills of Meghalaya! Deal Struck Between Starlink and the Government
The Meghalaya government has taken a significant step regarding satellite internet services. The state government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Starlink India, aimed at extending connectivity to remote and far-flung areas. This information was personally shared by Conrad K. Sangma on social media. The government states that this partnership will serve as a crucial step toward improving internet and digital access in the state’s remote regions.
According to the Chief Minister, the state has made strides in infrastructure and technology over the past few years, and various processes have been accelerated. However, there remain several areas where extending connectivity to schools, health centers, and villages continues to be a challenge. In this context, satellite-based services like Starlink are being viewed as a viable solution to bridge this gap.
Under this partnership, plans are in place to introduce advanced satellite connectivity technology to the state. The government believes that this initiative will enhance access to healthcare services, provide students with greater opportunities for online learning, and unlock new avenues for residents of rural areas. Farmers and remote communities, in particular, are expected to benefit significantly from this initiative.
The government has also indicated that efforts are underway to develop Shillong into a technology and IT hub for the Northeast region. Such initiatives are expected to help generate new opportunities for the youth and strengthen the digital ecosystem.
Gwynne Shotwell and Lauren Dreyer were also present during the signing of this MoU. The agreement focuses on expanding connectivity through Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet network.
