Layoffs Announced for Hundreds of Employees; Over 600 Jobs to Be Cut

Microsoft-owned LinkedIn has announced layoffs affecting hundreds of employees in California. Over 600 employees are set to lose their jobs in the coming months. According to a WARN filing, 606 employees were notified last week that their positions would be permanently eliminated. These layoffs are scheduled to take effect starting July 13.

CEO Had Signaled Changes

According to reports, the Mountain View office has been hit the hardest, with 352 jobs being eliminated. Additionally, 66 remote employees will be affected. In other cities, 108 employees will be laid off in San Francisco, 59 in Sunnyvale, and 21 in Carpinteria. These changes were foreshadowed in an internal memo issued earlier this month by CEO Daniel Shapero. He stated that the company needs to reorganize its operations and focus on long-term priorities.

Company to Cut Positions in These Departments

He indicated that the company would be reducing positions across its GBO, Marketing, Engineering, and Product departments. The memo also noted that LinkedIn intends to cut spending on marketing campaigns, vendor costs, customer events, and underutilized office spaces. The company aims to concentrate its resources on projects and teams expected to generate the greatest impact and yield the best returns.

According to reports, further layoffs may be on the horizon. Reuters reported that the company plans to reduce its total workforce by approximately 5 percent—equivalent to roughly 875 jobs—though the company has not yet officially confirmed this figure. These layoffs are occurring at a time when LinkedIn recently reported a 12 percent year-over-year revenue growth in its third quarter. This restructuring is taking place following Daniel Shapero’s appointment as CEO in April; prior to this role, he served as the company’s Chief Operating Officer.
